Each letter in the book of Revelation has three main parts: a review of both good and bad actions, a call for repentance for those who have gone astray, and a promise for those who stay faithful. In the letter to the church in Ephesus, Jesus points out both the good things the church is doing and areas that need improvement. Let’s look at the three positive things that Jesus commended this church for Jesus as the Lord of All Churches.
1. Hard Work and Perseverance
Jesus begins by recognizing the church for their hard work and determination:
“I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance.”
The church in Ephesus was busy and active. They weren’t sitting around doing nothing. They took their faith seriously, working hard to spread the gospel and help others. 2. Strong and True Beliefs
Next, Jesus commends the church for having strong, orthodox doctrine. He says:
“I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles, but are not, and have found them false.”
The Ephesians were careful about what they believed. They didn’t believe everything they heard; instead, they tested new teachings to make sure they were true. They didn’t accept false teachers or ideas, even if they seemed popular. They kept their faith pure and strong by sticking to the truth.
3. A Warning from the Apostle Paul
Jesus’ praise for the church aligns with a warning the Apostle Paul had given them. In Acts 20, Paul spoke to the elders in Ephesus before leaving them. He warned them about false teachers and trouble ahead:
“I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number, men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard!”
Paul had spent years warning them about this issue. He was deeply concerned for the future of the church in Ephesus, and his warnings were proven true as the church continued to fight against false teachings.
