A geographical description of Caunus by historian, philosopher and geographer Strabo (63 /64 BC – 24 AD)
“The Peraea of the Rhodians begins with Daedala, a place in the Rhodian territory, but ends with Mt. Phoenix, as it is called, which is also in the Rhodian territory. Off the Peraea lies the island Elaeussa, distant one hundred and twenty stadia from Rhodes. Between the two, as one sails towards the west in a straight line with the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia and Lycia, one comes to a gulf called Glaucus, which has good harbors; then to the Artemisium, a promontory and temple; then to the sacred precinct of Leto, above which, and above the sea, at a distance of sixty stadia, lies Calynda, a city,- then to Caunus and to the Cal- bis, a river near Caunus, which is deep and affords passage for merchant vessels; and between the two lies Pisilis.
Marmaris. For those coming from Marmaris, the first stop is Ortaca. İt takes 1,5 hours from Marmaris to Ortaca by minibuses and then 10 minutes to Dalyan.
Dolmus boats in Dalyan
You can find plentyful dolmus-boats in Dalyan. These boats or rowboats driven by local women – a funny alternative- take you to the coast of the ancient city. Besides, they’ll be ready for return whenever you ask. If you are determined to see – and experince- the whole city in one day, you’ll have to walk and walk and walk, so you may prefer the traktor buses for 5 YTL per person. A hat and reliable shoes are must.
Kaunos Museum City unfortunately has an unpleasant entrance. The wire fences surrounding the city remind a prison! but they are to protect the place from the goats and other animnals. You need 5 $ to enter the city. If you don’t have a guide, Cengiz Isık, the chief archaeologist of the Kaunos excavations, will guide you if he’s available. He’ll probably first advice you to buy a bottle of water-as cold as possible- and start the journey by climbing up to the Acropolis.
Without climbing up to the Acropolis, it may not be possible to feel how dangerous threats Caunians had lived under when they found this painstaking city, At an elevataion of 152 m, in addition to the striking panaroma, the break points of your tour will also appear: Amphitheatre, Church, Roman Bath, Terrace Temple, Fountain and Necropolis.
